roles.
When asked to introduce myself and my role in project kickoff meetings at work, I often say something like, "Hi. I'm Brady Stephenson, and my favorite roll is cinnamon."
It usually results in at least one chuckle (or groan) and someone saying, "Great! Now I have a craving for cinnamon rolls."
Pause and think of all the roles you've had during your lifetime.
Roles, not rolls, people. Focus. ;)
Some roles are common but personal. For me, son, brother, cousin, friend, husband, father...
Others are common during youth: student, classmate, tutor, teammate, etc.
We often take on roles to accomplish projects around the house: painter, plumber, electrician, or carpenter.
My professional roles have included things like sales associate, claims adjuster, IT systems analyst, programmer, data modeler, database administrator, systems engineer, solution developer, project coordinator, project manager, product manager, director of operations, designer, process engineer, portfolio manager, program manager, corporate strategist, and two of my least favorites: spreadsheet monkey and PowerPoint chimp.
These three rolls roles, however, are among my favorites:
